Open Houses for potential 6th grade students

posted Sep 7, 2018, 8:29 AM by Donna Smiley   [ updated Dec 5, 2018, 6:02 AM by Ana Crenovich ]

The Anderson School held two Open House events in November 2018 for potential 6th grade students in the 2019-20 school year. You DO NOT have to attend an Open House to be considered for testing/admission. These are information sessions with a self-guided tour of some of our classrooms and a chance to meet some of our students/parents in order for you to determine if/how to rank Anderson on your middle school choice application. The handouts from these evenings are posted below.

If your child was not offered a seat and you would like to inquire about their position on Anderson's wait list, please write to DSmiley@schools.nyc.gov. Please do not call the school so our phone lines are free for our current families.

OPEN HOUSES for 2018-19 School Year

posted Mar 27, 2018, 1:55 PM by Donna Smiley   [ updated Mar 29, 2018, 12:22 PM by Ana Crenovich ]

K-3 G&T scores were released on 3/27/18. Students who received an overall G&T score of 97th-99th percentile officially qualify to list Anderson on their child's G&T application. (Please note that only 99th percentile students who are not current Anderson siblings have ever been placed here through the current process.)
OPEN HOUSE dates are Monday, April 9th and Thursday, April 12th from 6:00-7:30 pm. There is no need to register, just show up - adults ONLY- and we will welcome visitors until we hit capacity per the NYC fire code. You are invited to hear short presentations from the parent and community coordinators, a teacher or two, and then you will be able to take a self-tour through our elementary school classrooms and view student work, speak with current parents, and look at the school facilities so you can make an informed choice when deciding which schools you will list on your child's application. You DO NOT HAVE TO ATTEND AN OPEN HOUSE to select The Anderson School as one of your choices.
We have two classes of 25 Kindergarten students each. We currently do not have any seats for non-siblings in grades one, two, or three, but that may change as we near the end of this year. (We do not know how many non-sibling seats we will have to offer in Kindergarten yet.) The Anderson School does not admit any new students to grades four or five.

Middle School Admissions

3/27 UPDATE:
The Anderson School cannot release information about our sixth grade test results until after the NYC Department of Education's Enrollment Office extends offers to all sixth grade students based on their district's middle school applications. Once those matches have been communicated with families, you may contact us to find out if your child is on our waitlist that extends to seventh grade and what his or her ranking might be. Not all students who tested were ranked. The DOE's website states that matches will be made in April. We have no more information about when in April they will be released.

1/5/18 UPDATE:

The Anderson School has emailed more testing invitations (all of Manhattan except for private and charter schools), with the majority of our notifications to Queens, Bronx, and Brooklyn schools to be sent to guidance counselors/APs the week of January 8th-12th. If your child does NOT attend a public school and you have not heard from The Anderson School, please send an email with your child's name in the subject line to dsmiley@schools.nyc.gov so I can add your email address to our database next week), otherwise we will communicate with you via U.S. Mail. Letters are being sent to schools for distribution to families unless your email address was included in your application file we received from the DOE.

Test dates for general education applicants have been changed to Saturday, January 27 and Saturday, February 3, 2018, with an alternate date for religious conflict on Thursday, February 8, 2018.

Applicants to The Anderson School's ICT class are also still being contacted as we evaluate the student application information. Most of the testing for the ICT class will take place on Sunday, January 21, 2018.

All offers of 7th grade admission for the 2018-19 school year will be made from the students who already participated in last year's 6th grade testing and are already on our waitlist.

***K-3 Open House Wednesday, April 19th

posted Apr 6, 2017, 10:53 AM by Ana Crenovich   [ updated Apr 19, 2017, 7:58 AM ]

The Anderson School’s K-3 Open House will take place on Wednesday, April 19th from 6:15 - 7:45 p.m. Please arrive no earlier than 6:00 PM.

Anderson will have 36 seats in Kindergarten for non-siblings, 5 seats in first grade for non-siblings, and NO seats in second grade and third grade for non-siblings for fall 2017, all to be determined by the DOE's Enrollment Office by lottery for 99th percentile scorers only. (No other grades or scores will be considered for admission for the 2017-18 school year.)

Details about our Evening Open Houses

  • You are NOT required to attend an Open House in order to rank Anderson as a choice on your G&T application; however, we encourage parents to attend in order to make an informed decision about their child’s education
  • Our evening Open Houses include an information session with members of our administration and faculty, followed by a self-guided tour of our classrooms, where current parents will be available to answer your questions.
  • The Open Houses are for grown-ups only.
  • No registration is required; however, each evening we will limit attendance if our auditorium reaches the maximum capacity allowed by the fire code.

Available Seats
We have a total of 50 Kindergarten seats. We do not yet know how many of these seats will be taken by siblings of current students. We expect to have 6 seats in total for 1st grade, but none for 2nd or 3rd grade at this time. Occasionally, seats will open up in any grade due to attrition; however, the number of seats available should not be a factor in how you rank your school choices.

Test Scores

For the past nine years, only children with an overall G&T percentile rank in the 99th percentile have been offered seats in grades K-3 at The Anderson School by the Department of Education (except siblings of current Anderson students.) We don’t anticipate that this will change this year. Although children who scored at or above the 97th percentile are eligible to apply to Anderson and their parents will see our name as an option on their applications, the chance of being offered a seat here is highly unlikely.

Daytime Tours
Parents of children who are offered a seat at The Anderson School for fall 2017 will be invited to take a daytime tour of our classrooms before the deadline to accept or decline the seat in early June. If you receive a notice from the Department of Education that your child has been offered a seat here, please check this web page right away. We will post information about the tours here as soon as we are able, once we know the offers have been sent to parents.

Our Location
We are located at 100 West 77th Street, between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues, in the William O'Shea Campus building. The nearest subway stops are at Broadway & 79th Street (the #1 train) and at 81st & Central Park West/American Museum of Natural History (the B and C trains.)
