School Hours for 2014-2015 School Year

As Ms. Hyde announced in her June 26th letter to parents, the school’s hours for all students in grades K through 8 will be 8:20 am-2:40 pm, due to the new UFT teachers’ contract. Busing will be a half hour earlier in the afternoons and Wingspan will also start right after the school day ends at 2:40 pm. So the start time is the same as it has been, but the dismissal time will be 30 minutes earlier than it used to be for grades K-5. Grades 6-8 were already dismissed at 2:40.

Summer Reading Lists and Supply Lists for Fall 2014

Summer reading lists and supply lists for each grade are attached below (Kindergarten is at the bottom.) Please remember to open the list for the grade your child will be in this September, not last year's grade! 

Parents of rising 3rd - 7th graders: all rising 3rd - 7th graders have one book that is required reading this summer! You will find the title of the book at the very top of your reading list and some questions to consider are included in the document. All the other books on the list are suggested reading.

Parents of rising Kindergarten - 2nd graders and 8th graders: the books on your lists are suggested reading only. Please make sure your child reads and/or is read to this summer!

  • The UPDATED Department of Education School Year Calendar - This calendar has been UPDATED TWICE since it was first posted here. Please check the "as of" date to make sure you always have the latest version!
  • The Tentative Schedule for Sports and Clubs and the Anderson Musical. (Sports and clubs are open to grades 6-8 and the musical is open to grades 5-8. The schedule has been updated to include Table Tennis!)

Some Afterschool Activities Canceled Today 2/3/2014

All school-sponsored afterschool activities have been cancelled for today, due to the snow. These include Intramural Basketball, Math Team, Science Olympiad, Debate Team, the Table Tennis match and the Academies with Mr. Woo & Ms. Freund.

Wingspan afterschool is still on - you are welcome to pick up your child at any time before 6 p.m. today.

 Dismissal will be at 3:05 in the schoolyard, as usual.

 MAKING A DISMISSAL CHANGE: We will ask teachers to check their email today! If your child is supposed to be in a Monday Wingspan class, but you would rather pick up at 3:05 in the school yard or have them put on the bus, please email your child’s teacher by 2:00 p.m. If you want your child taken off the bus or put onto a bus - please email your child’s teacher by 2:00 p.m.


Tonight's Open House is happening!

Tonight's Open House for families applying to grades 6 and 7 will take place as scheduled, so if you are registered, we hope to see you there. Unfortunately, there is no other time to hold it before the DOE's middle school application deadline this Friday, December 13th.

Fall 2013 AMS Sports Tryouts

If your child will be trying out for a fall sport, please complete, sign and return the clearance form attached at the bottom of this page. All tryouts will take place from 3:20-5:00 p.m. on the following days:
  • Boys Soccer – Wednesday, September 18th
  • Girls Soccer – Thursday, September 19th
  • Girls Volleyball (JV & Varsity) – Tuesday, September 17th and Thursday, September 19th
  • Flag Football (JV & Varsity) – Tuesday, October 8th

A back-to-school supply list and a suggested reading list for each grade are attached below (Kindergarten is at the very bottom.) Please remember to open the list for the grade your child will be in this September, not last year's grade! 

Parents of rising 4th graders: please note that there is a book all rising 4th graders are required to read this summer.

Parents of rising 2nd and 3rd graders: your supply lists have been updated - you do not need the green pocket folder for science.

The list of eco-friendly school supply suggestions is now posted below.

The LATEST Department of Education School Year Calendar is attached below, as well - updated as of 7/1/2013. It now includes Meet the Teacher Night and the June 2014 half days of school!

If Your Child Was Just Offered a Seat at Anderson:

Welcome to The Anderson School P.S. 334!

Now that your child has been offered a seat at The Anderson School, we have lots of things for you to do! (The links below will work best on a browser other than Internet Explorer. This information is also attached as a PDF at the bottom of this page.)

1.     NOTIFY US    Once you have made your final decision about whether or not you will accept your child’s seat at Anderson, please email both Donna Smiley and Marcie Shaw at: DSmiley@schools.nyc.gov and MShaw6@schools.nyc.gov .

2.      REGISTER    We will be registering new students on Tuesday, June 18th and Friday, June 21st. (Your child must be present at registration, unless he or she attended a DOE school or pre-K this year.)  Make an appointment to register your child or you will forfeit your seat at The Anderson School: http://www.jooners.com/guest?l=76de470a-1cc7-4038-8ad9-4db85640b878 See the list of documents you need to bring for registration at the bottom of this page!

3.      TOUR    If you feel you need to tour The Anderson School before you make your admissions decision, we are offering a morning tour on Wednesday, June 19th. Although touring is not mandatory in order to register, it is highly encouraged if you have not yet visited the school, in order to make a well-informed decision. 4.      KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION    It’s very important for your child to attend our orientation on Monday, June 24th from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Visiting the school now really helps the transition to "big kid" school by dispelling any anxious feelings about what to expect in September. New students will visit a kindergarten classroom (without parents) while we brief you about the start of school. The PTA’s Welcome Picnic immediately follows (see below.) 5.      PTA WELCOME PICNIC    On Monday, June 24th from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. our PTA will host a welcome picnic for incoming students and their families. Details will be coming soon!

6.      PARENTS ONLY RECEPTION    Parents are invited to a welcome gathering thrown for them by the PTA on Tuesday, June 25th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at a location near the school. The link to the invitation is included in your welcome email from Donna Smiley. Please RSVP!

7.      DON’T FORGET YOUR LOCAL SCHOOL    Once you have registered at Anderson, please don't forget to inform your local school that your child will not be attending in the fall, so another child can come off their waitlist!


When you come to register, you must bring your child with you if your child did NOT attend a Department of Education pre-K or school this year. You also must bring:

  • Your offer letter from the DOE
  • Child’s birth certificate or passport (please bring the original and a copy)
  • Child’s immunization records
  • Child’s Health Examination Form (download one here: http://schools.nyc.gov/NR/rdonlyres/003A3BA1-95BC-4852-92DF-40AEF758EAA4/38865/CH206.pdf and have your pediatrician complete it.)
  • Proof of residence, which will be verified by any two of the following (for each, bring the original and a copy) :
    • A residential utility bill (gas or electric) in the resident’s name issued by National Grid, Con Edison, or the Long Island Power Authority; must be dated within the past 60 days
    • Documentation or letter on letterhead from a federal, state or local government agency, including the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), Human Resources Administration (HRA), the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), or an ACS subcontractor indicating the resident’s name and address; must be dated within the past 60 days
    • An original lease agreement, deed or mortgage statement for the residence
    • A current property tax bill for the residence
    • A water bill for the residence; must be dated within the past 90 days
    • Official payroll documentation from an employer such as a form submitted for tax withholding purposes or payroll receipt; a letter on the employer’s letterhead will not be accepted; must be dated within the past 60 days
  • Child’s latest report card/transcript (if available)
  • Child’s Individual Education Program (IEP) and/or 504 Accommodation Plan (if applicable and available)
